Possible Solution to U.S. Issues

Posted at

There are two stories I've read here by different authors that propose how to solve the current issues we have been facing.

The first is by Ernest ByWater and is his "Seccession" Story. Very good Read and he does present a possible solution that would work.

The other is in progress by James Jay Madison and called "Against All Enemies". Very interesting so far and although not far enough along to conclude, may offer a possible resolution to the current issues. Is it likely to happen? Not sure but in this story, he does manage to hit the right tone to indicate it's quite possible in my thinking, which is one of the signs of a very good story. I just hope he can keep it up reach a solid ending instead of a whimper or a break for another book.

How young I was

Harry Lime mentioned being 9 yrs old when he got into Sci Fi but I'll have to tell you, that's nothing. I was introduced to it when Star Trek first came on he Air in 1968. It helped that Dad was involved in the Space Program while in the Marines are one of the crew on the Recovery Helicopters. His was the one responsible for the recovery of the capsule from Apollo 6 that splashed down a mear half mile from the Recovery Carrier. Unmaned launch but still important to the entire program.

After he was Transferred to LTA Tustin, California, we followed once school was out that summer and I've considered the state to be home since. One thing that moved me into the Bookworm stage was all of the monthly magazines such as FS&F, Analog, Asimov, Galaxy and a bunch of others that I started reading with dad.

My reading expanded into Tom Swift, Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew - solid stories for young readers and then I discovered Frank Herbert, Asimov's "Foundation" and we can't forget Heinlein or Clarke can we. All of the old masters who wrote solid stories with some trappings of impossible such as Space Travel, Robots and such. Most of them were hopeful at the time. Even Star Wars is a Western with Space as the place instead of cutting them off at the western pass. Same as many of the plots we say with John Wayne in their westerns. So it seems I tend to be a bit forgiving on an authors spelling it's because a solid plot that engages me is more important then having the right word all the time.

I'm one of those folks who see to have good luck with drive life as they either die within the first two months or last dang near forever. Today my 1st Gen Seagate 3TB drive decided to fail on me. Yes it's a 1st Gen that predates the changes Seagate made that had them failing by the dozen soon after so I'm well satisfied with how long it's lasted (10+ years). One reason I'm not upset is Backups, Backups, Backups. I have backups of all my data so although the drive failed, I haven't lost anything.

Incomplete Stories and other thoughts

I've been hopeful that Dual Writer would be able to continue his "LA Fun" story but am loosing hope due to his health issues. It's a shame that it will be imomplete but Life Happens.

In my case, I've been slowly working on my Boyz to Furz but the muse keeps jumping onto new tech and Climate Change instead so things are going very slowly. What I am trying to do is at least get an Outline together so I can focus on sections of the story even if I can't keep the muse on track for the entire thing but I never learned to outline before the fact.

Another distraction is that my Nephew got me back into playing Guild Wars 2 after I took a break in October of 2020. Since then, I've completed killing Zaitan on three of my older characters and having fun in a general way. I have several other characters I've been using as Storage Mules but I'm in the process of cleaning out lots of excess in my storage and finalizing stuff such as Armor for those characters I intend on playing. Then the Guild Wars 2 devs announce another expansion and started beta testing some new character classes. #$*(&@# now I need three of each base class for the new Elite Specializations so there goes more time down the drain.

Another element that's taking time is I'm tossing Windows under the bus as 10 is the last version I'm going to run. This means I am starting to plan a return to Gentoo Linux as it offers me the flexibility I want without much of the overhead. I have also begun working on over clocking my system for increased performance though being able to hit 4500 on all cores during a Cinebench 20 test was surprising and no, I haven't touched any settings except to disable the PBO (Precision Boost Overclocking) while setting a -100 mv Under Volt to the CPU and Cores. Reduced Temps enough to actually hit that 4500 as with PBO enabled, the system could only hit a bit over 4100 clock on all cores during the same CB20 testing.

Don't sweat the small things

Just read Earnest Bywater's blog where he's changing his latest story because some idiots are know it alls that think a 0.22 calibre short sub-sonic can't work in a semi-auto. To all of them, it's a damn story and so long as it doesn't impinge on the action, I'm one who'd not bother due to the entire thing being Fictional. In his case, I'd change all references to it being a BFG with a 60m Barrel that fires a 1g round of Antimatter that only generates enough energy to pop a ballon just to screw with them.

Seriously, the things to report are typos, italics and other formating errors when they occur and the biggest is wrong names being used. I've seen many stories where they start with "Hohn" and end up calling them "Sally" several times due to editing issues. Those are the kind of errors we need to know about. Now if they start off with reference to a 65 Mustang using a straight six to a V8 without an explanation, then I'll point it out as that's too jaring a change. Otherwise don't sweat the small stuff if it doesn't throw you out of the story. If it does, then get some help with the OCD or at least keep you complaint to yourself
