This author took a long break from posting, it’s great to have him back. This one is the earliest story on his page, from 2005, and it tells the story of Ron Masters, who discovers that his wife of four years is cheating on him. He's devastated, gets the evidence and the divorce, and then tries to move on with his life. The age-old problem of still loving her even after she’s ripped his heart out is the centre of this story; there’s a good twist when he gets sent to supervise a contract in Afghanistan, and then he comes home to catch up with the friends he has left.

Although (if I’m being ultra-picky) there’s probably a little more descriptive sex than is actually necessary to progress the action, the plot is well thought through and the story well told. Related from a variety of viewpoints, it’s a very satisfying development of characters and motives. The text is taut and free from major errors, and the suspense is certainly dragged out in the penultimate chapter.

However – spoiler alert – a lot of you REALLY won’t like the ending. The bitch only gets slightly singed. So, if you hate reconciliation after cheating, please pass this one by. If you’re a soppy romantic like me and believe that true love will win out over adversity and stupidity, then I think you’ll enjoy it very much. If you prefer BTB then you’ll hate it. Don’t say I haven’t warned you.

This is the first story submitted by Longhorn__07. I didn't know what to expect. What I found was three or four stories that add up to one.

He does a superb job of showing the effect if a wife's deception on her husband. As the story goes on and little hints are dropped that show that not only was she cheating on him but several of their "friends" were aware of it, you grow to really hate this woman.

Then there is a new love. Everything that was missing with his wife it there. Except for one thing. In the middle of this story, our hero almost gets himself killed.

I hated Longhorn at the beginning of the final story. More than once I was ready to put the whole thing down. How could he do this to me? But something made me read. I just knew that things would turn around and the pay-back would be complete.

What turned around was me. The author did a superb job of turning my viewpoint 180 degrees from what it was. I still don't know how he did it. He took my emotions, my feelings, my core beliefs and played with them like a sculptor with a blob of clay. And that's skill.

Separate Lives is a roller coaster. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll probably hate. But you'll be glad you read it.
