I believe you are looking for a Wes Boyd story. If memory serves me correctly it is Square One. Not sure it is on this site, and at the moment I am not sure he used that pen name here.
Definitely Square One, but not on this site.
https://storiesonline.net/a/Wes_Boyd and https://finestories.com/a/Wes_Boyd is where he posted here.
His "The Next Generation" is only on Finestories, three others are on both and the rest are only on SOL - a total of 14 stories out of the 64 he wrote.
Oh, and he worked as a barman in the brothel, not whatever those unfamiliar with the story may have thought.
Yes, absolutely. Wes posted here (https://storiesonline.net/a/Wes_Boyd) but not that story. Wes passed away 6 years ago, but his own site is still open.
It's part of his spearfishlake cycle, and any search machine will find the site. Sorry, no link to outside websites.
It's a good story and well researched. If you find it, look up Out of the Cage, too. It's one of the best of his later stories, with a true anti-hero.
I'm not familiar with "oil man story", and can't see any book on that site which could be described as such.
The only character in Wes Boyd's writings that I recall might be an oil man was a background character who was at least part-owner of the brothel the MC in the story described in the OP.

To get the story background to fully appreciate OOTC, you'd need to read Bird in the Hand first. If you like them, just start at the bottom of the page (the first posted) and read them all, not a duff one there although some are better than others and there are a wide range of subjects. I'm partial to Best Served Cold and Magic Carpet, though I'm just finishing up a full reread of everything, which is why I missed the site shenanigans here.
