What countries are NOT subject to new tariffs?

PotomacBob 🚫

The news stories I've heard reported that "almost all" countries were hit by tariffs of at least 10 percent. I have heard nothing about which specific countries were exempted. Anybody know who was left out - or where I could find a list?

@PotomacBob

Russia, North Korea, Cuba, Belarus.

Google is your friend.

These don't get new tariffs since we don't trade with them.

Not sure if this was a sarcastic comment, but just to be sure...

(source)

The US imported Russian goods worth 300 million USD in February alone. In 2024, the US imported goods worth three BILLION dollars from Russia, while exporting goods worth 500 Million into Russia.

The only one the US actually isn't trading with is North Korea.

That 3B is less than .001 of total US imports and less than a tenth of EU imports.

But higher than the Falkland Islands, which have been set a high tariff.

That's just bizarre. Why would the tariff be any different to the UK and Gibraltar. (That's rhetorical, BTW).

LOL had one of those anti trump protests today in local rural town. it was like 40 people, all of them over 50. the funny thing is, they only had two signs

save abortion and one that said "help HAMAS"

When I first read the title, I thought they were asking about the new under age requirement not some US, BS.

Some of the countries listed for tariffs do not even have any population, only penguins.

They deserve 100% tariffs. And the same for countries hosting jokers, riddlers, poison ivies, mister freezes etc.

The Donald is doing a tariffic job!

Several territories are listed to prevent tariff avoidance by, say, the UK routing all trade through the Falkland Islands or Australia through the McDonald Islands.

The point is to ensure no end-runs or loopholes are exploited. I am pro free-trade, and despise tariffs, but the goal here is to ensure nobody can get around them by tricky freight routing or region-of-origin labeling.

That goal would be be met by putting the same tariff on everyone.

Yes, though allegedly, the tariffs are reciprocal by trading region. Whether that is true or not is an open question.

It's not a question. It's simply not true, and the foreign trade figures are all out in the open. I know that big US media has called Trump out on it, but it seems that nobody cares about facts. Though even if the numbers were correct, the imbalance in digital goods trade in favor of the US more than evens out the negative foreign trade balance for tangible goods.

I read an article a couple of days ago explaining how those uninhabited territories - along with a tourist island near Australia - landed on that list.
It was down to the bills accompanying shipments being misinterpreted, the head office of one company involved is in Norfolk in England and that magically transformed into Norfolk Island. Another error was based on a street name (or company name) in Vienna.
I'd look them up but I'm currently ill and about to crash out for a few hours.
Do the people on Norfolk Island even particularly care? They don't export to the US anyway.

Isn't the Falklands tariff higher than the UK?

There's been talk of the EU sending goods via the UK. Since the EU hates the UK, I can't see it happening on any significant scale.

I don't know the intricate details of any county's tarffs (I oppose them in the general case), but the Trump administration claims they're reciprocal.

They used a very simple formula based on bilateral trade deficit and little else. With make no sense. And the countries and territories list appear to be pulled from internet domain names...

It's no 5D chess, it's pure incompetence.

And, of course, the exemptions list shows who his real friends are.

As it seems that Tariffs can cause orgasms, especially in and around central Washington DC, can I expect a flood of stories later this year starring a Tariff as a M.C. and a poor helpless and hapless Islas de PingΓΌinos as the victim. Will there be a new TAG - Tariffs
